Behoud Griekenland

Klein in oppervlakte, maar biodiversiteit & endemiciteit extreem hoog

"Doe mee!"

2500-year-old-olive-tree_edited.jpg

STOP!

A Cigarette, a Street, and a Country That Looks Away

Every day, in every Greek city and village, the same small act repeats itself. A cigarette is finished, flicked to the ground, and forgotten. Nobody gasps. Nobody stops the person. Nobody pays a cent. And because nothing happens, we have all quietly agreed that nothing is wrong.

But something is wrong, and it should be said plainly.

Greece is a beautiful and generous country, rich in sea, mountains, history and light. People travel across the world to stand here. And yet we are treating it like a giant ashtray. Pavements, beaches, village squares, the edges of forests, the steps of ancient places: all of it dotted with butts that someone decided were not their problem.

It gets worse. Too many people do not even bother to put the cigarette out. They throw it still burning, onto dry grass, into a pile of leaves, out of a car window onto a roadside. In a country that burns every summer, that is not bad manners. It is a gamble with homes, forests and lives. And it is a gamble we keep losing. Almost every wildfire in Greece begins with human carelessness, and a discarded cigarette is among the most common sparks.

The law already understands part of this. Throwing a lit cigarette from a car is treated as a serious offence, with a fine and the loss of the driver's licence. That is not nothing. That is a real consequence.

But for the person on foot, the law is almost invisible. Walking down the street, sitting on a beach, standing outside a kafeneio, a burning cigarette falls to the ground, and what happens? In most places, nothing at all. A fine may exist somewhere on paper, buried in municipal regulations, but it is not a figure anyone knows, not a figure anyone fears, and almost never a figure anyone pays.

That is the gap. Not the absence of a law, but the absence of a visible, known, consistently applied consequence for the most common form of littering in this country.

And it costs us. The filter is plastic. It does not vanish. It washes into drains, into rivers, into the same sea we swim in and sell to the world. It breaks down into microplastics that end up in fish and eventually on our plates. Cigarette filters are recognised as one of the most polluting single-use plastics in the sea, and the system that was meant to manage them still has not arrived. The bill falls on municipalities, on taxpayers, on the workers who bend down for hours to sweep up what others decided to leave behind.

There is also a quieter cost that nobody mentions. The honest citizen who carries their butt until they find a bin pays twice: once in taxes, and once in watching others get away with it. When there is no consequence, the careless are rewarded and the careful feel foolish.

So the question should be asked openly, and without apology: why does Greece not treat a cigarette thrown on the ground by a pedestrian with the same seriousness it already applies to one thrown from a car window?

To the Minister, and to everyone in a position to change this, a concrete proposal is offered.

A fine of 150 euros for anyone who throws a cigarette on the ground, on foot, on the beach, in a square, anywhere.

It is the same figure already applied to drivers. It harmonises the law. It is serious enough to change habits and fair enough to be accepted. It is not a new invention. It is consistency.

And a fine alone is not enough. It must be paired with real enforcement.

The same seriousness brought to parking, to seatbelts, to noise. The Fire Service already conducts intensive checks in high-risk areas. The same logic should apply to every street corner, not only to forests in August.

A public campaign that speaks to pride, not only to fear. A campaign that says: this land is ours. This sea is ours. We do not spit on our own home.

Other countries have shown that a visible fine combined with awareness changes behavior. Greece can do the same. This is a people who care deeply about their land and their sea. The laws simply need to say so, and to mean it.

A cleaner street will not solve everything. But it will tell every child who walks on it that this country respects its own home. That is worth a law, and it is long overdue.

Onze Visie en Hun Overtuigingen

Silvanus (Romeinse mythologie)

Phanes/Phanous (Orphische Traditie)
